Bananas are one of the most representative agricultural products of Ecuador, and their export has maintained a constant presence in the country’s foreign trade. Between 2021 and 2024, banana exports have experienced fluctuations in terms of volume and value, solidifying their importance in the Ecuadorian economy.
Main Destinations of Ecuadorian Bananas
The countries that imported the most Ecuadorian bananas in recent years include: Russia, the United States, the Netherlands, Turkey, Germany, Argentina, China, Italy, Belgium, and Japan.
Variations in Exports
Despite the slight growth in value, a 4.7% decrease in volume was recorded, indicating a possible impact from climatic, logistical, or international demand factors.
Evolution of Exports (2021-2024)
– In 2021, the value of banana exports was $3.548 billion.
– In 2022, the figure decreased to $3.479 billion.
– In 2023, exports reached $3.029 billion, reflecting a significant decline.
– In 2024, until December, a slight recovery was recorded with $3.272 billion in exports.
Export Volume
In 2021, the export volume reached 6.6 million tons. By 2024, the exported volume has remained stable around 6.1 million tons.

The European Union represents 28.1% of the total banana exports. Diversification of destinations: Growth in exports to the Middle East and Asia. Logistical challenges: Increased transportation and production costs. International competition: Countries like Colombia and Costa Rica continue to gain market share.
