Banana continues to solidify its position as one of Ecuador’s main non-oil export products. According to figures from the Central Bank of Ecuador, during the period from January to November 2024, international banana sales reached 3,307.8 million dollars, with a growth of 1.6% compared to the same period of the previous year.

Comparison with Other Non-Oil Products

Banana remains among the top five export products in the country, alongside:

  • Shrimp (leader in non-oil exports with 6.416 million dollars)
  • Cocoa and processed products
  • Natural flowers
  • Canned fish

Variations in Exports

Despite the slight growth in terms of value, a 4.7% decrease in volume was recorded, indicating a possible impact from climatic factors, logistics, or international demand.

Key Factors in Production and Exportation.

Increasing international competition: Countries like Colombia and Costa Rica continue to gain market share in the global banana market.
Sustainability and certifications: The demand for bananas with ecological and fair trade certifications continues to rise.
Logistical and transportation costs: The increase in shipping freight costs has been a challenge for Ecuadorian exporters.

Bananas are not only a key fruit for the global diet but also a vital source of income for Ecuador, reaffirming its role as one of the leaders in global production and export.
