Banana Exports
Ecuador's banana exports from January to November 2024 totaled 331.31 million boxes, a +1.60% increase compared to the same period in 2023.
Factors That Affected the Reduction in Exports:
Despite an increase in bunching between 2023 and 2024, banana production was reduced due to adverse weather conditions such as low temperatures and excessive rainfall, resulting in a -15% lower yield. Exports grew by +1.60%, driven by new plantations. However, the increase in the minimum support price reduced purchases from the European Union (-16.43%), although shortages in other producing countries forced some market recovery. In Russia, purchases fell by -8.78% due to the war and economic sanctions.
- Climate conditions: Temperature variations and excessive rainfall affected the physiological development of the plantations.
Production reduction: Despite more bunching, production decreased compared to 2023.
New plantations: The increase in exports (+1.60%) was partly due to new plantations entering production this year.
Increase in minimum support price: The rise in the price of banana boxes reduced purchases from some markets, especially the European Union.
European market: Banana purchases from Ecuador decreased by -16.43% due to the high price and competition from other regions.
Problems in other producing countries: Colombia and Central America faced difficulties, which forced multinational companies to purchase more bananas from Ecuador.
Situation in Russia: The war with Ukraine and economic sanctions reduced demand for Ecuadorian bananas by -8.78%.
